The revised girls water polo brackets have been completed. In the desire for complete transparency, the CIF Southern Section would like to state that the reason for these revisions have nothing to do with the system in place, but rather on a combination of faulty data and in the attempt to be as fair to all member schools as possible, especially those so devastated by the many local fires.
The data used to feed the computer rankings system included an algorithm that referenced National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Water Polo rules on scoring forfeited games. That rule states water polo forfeits result in a 5-0 score for the team receiving the forfeit win. To avoid skewing the resulting outcome, those games were rated at “0” for both teams by the water polo department when inputting the scores into that system. Unfortunately, that system did not render a power ranking that recognized that weighted designation. Thus, 5-0 wins by certain schools resulted in the system interpreting those to be 5-0 wins in the pool. Like dominoes, once those scores populated as such, they created a situation that caused all following divisions to be incorrect. Once alerted to that fact, the water polo department immediately set upon remedying that mistake.
We apologize for any confusion or problems this may have created and always strive to get the brackets, under any bylaw, correct. However, Bylaw 3513 – PLAYOFF ENTRIES TENTATIVE – states:
All entries into the playoffs are tentative until the first round is completed. Updated results or new information may necessitate changes in any draw when necessary. No change in entries will be permitted after the first round (or “wild card” game if it applies to a league entry) has been played.
This provides for those updated results you see here. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to the girls water polo administrator, Kristine Palle and she will attempt to address your issues if possible.
